Susan Klein

Bio and Statement

Susan Klein Design Studio began in 1974 after Susan graduated from a small fashion school in San Francisco. She designed and sold original clothing, home furnishings and accessories and personal products. She opened her first retail store in Truckee, CA. where she sold her own work and that of other artists. After six months of success, she moved to Berkeley, CA and opened two gallery stores which featured the finest of handcrafted products created by herself and other artists around the country and the world. As the sole buyer for these retail outlets, she would seek out new trends and had her artists create saleable products in ceramic, textile design, metal and wood.

Susan has been a mixed media artist, painter, weaver, textile designer as well as a successful jeweler for over 30 years. She has created and sold over 200 original card images and concepts, textile designs, prints and paintings in gouache, watercolor, acrylic and pastel. Susan's inspiration comes from nature and the exploration of color and shape as well as through the experimentation with unique materials and found objects. Her favorite medium to use is Crayon d' Ache on black paper.

In 1991 Susan took a night class in

metalsmithing and within eight weeks began wholesaling her original whimsical jewelry. Her work is being sold in over 500 galleries, museums, home furnishing and accessory stores and boutiques. Susan's work has been featured in over 20 retail catalogs which includes Sundance, Isabella and Cold Water Creek. Susan has also shown and sold her work in Milan Italy, Toulouse France, Glasgow Scotland and the Queen of England owns a piece of Susan Klein Design jewelry. She has been licensed by Jody Coyote Jewelry Co. for her jewelry designs.

Susan has sold over a million dollars of her art and craft. As a designer, and with her extensive background in both wholesale and retail, she has the ability to scope out and set trends, colors and styles. Susan's whimsical, quirky designs are well received by a variety of business venues. Her paintings are light and simple and express a true love of color and life. Many of her paintings work wonderfully as fabrics, card images, paper products, dinnerware, flooring such as rugs, vinyl, or tile, and posters or wall art. Susan makes a statement with her pieces, that style, fun and beauty are important and her success in retail and wholesale ventures for over 25 years has proven this.

Susan Klein Jewelry

Susan Klein Design Jewelry is constructed from cast sterling and bronze. It is created using the lost wax process. Her pieces are oxidized and lightly brushed and some are adorned with semi-precious stones and assorted beads and drops. Susan fabricates pins and earrings in copper, nickel and brass and incorporates the two processes. All the jewelry is original and hand-crafted in her Eugene, Oregon studio.

Her earwires are sterling silver and with some pieces, niobium. Susan incorporates fabrication techniques to enhance individual pieces in her wholesale line. She creates seasonal collections and works with color using vintage ribbons, leathers and cords. Susan has been designing and selling her jewelry since 1991 and has been shown in over 500 retail boutiques, galleries, museums and catalogs in the U.S. and in Europe. Special requests are welcome and she gives exclusives.
